Abandoned
A photographer explores abandoned mental institutions across the US in this pictorial essay. The results are haunting, but more than the architectural aspect what is really compelling are the traces of who used to inhabit these places. Human leftovers of a population that has been abandoned by a poor health system and society that just doesn't quite know what to do with mental health patients beyond containment.
I can only imagine how fascinating and moving it must have been to walk these empty halls and consider what might have transpired there.
Matt McDonough is the photographer. There's a short interview piece on the NY Times blog and more pictures here.
